Everything from intricately woven, handmade carpets (reminiscent of fairytale stories a la Aladdin!) to gilt birdcages can be bought in Tunisia. Located in the Medina, the souks offer a huge selection of objets d'art where everything can be bartered for. A sharp eye and nerves of steel are essential pre-requisites of shopping for bargains in the souks (markets)!
Good finds include hand carved objects such as salad bowls, vases, lamps and jewellery made of natural olive wood.
The main thoroughfare through the medina, rue Djamaa Ez-Zitouna, is often bustling with tourists but more authentic souks (markets) can be found in the myriad of surrounding alleys. Originally, each souk specialized in a single trade. Among the oldest is the 13th-century Souk el Attarine (the perfume-makers' market), which still sells scents and essential oils .
